'The Gathering' is gathering momentum! The Gathering will
take place on the 25th and 26th of February 2015.
West Lothian College (WLC) has worked in partnership with
the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) for the past 3 years.
The partnership enables WLC students from the HNC groups; Hair, Beauty,
Photography and Events the rare and invaluable opportunity to apply their
academic knowledge creating practical skills experience at the Gathering.
The Gathering organised by SCVO brings together all parts of
the third sector, with 3000+ visitors it is the largest event of its kind in
the UK and is held over two days. The Gathering incorporates an exhibition and
marketplace with over 100 exhibitors, as well as a packed events programme
including over 50 workshops and seminars led by voluntary organisations, social
enterprises, government, the media and companies who work with and alongside
the sector.
The HNC Events students play a fundamental role in the built
up to the Gathering and at the event. Students are invited to apply for a 6
week placement at SCVO office based in Edinburgh. All applicants are requested
to submit a CV and are interviewed by SCVO’s Training & Events manager. The
successful candidate is welcomed as part of the team for 1 day per week in the
6 weeks leading up to the Gathering.
All events students then spent 3 days with the SCVO team
supporting the event set up followed by the 2 day event. This is an excellent
opportunity that allows students to participate in the set up witnessing the
transformation of an empty shell into a fully functioning exhibition hall. The
students gain an understanding of the logistics and processes involved in
setting up such a large scale event. During the Gathering each student has a
defined role in running the event which enables the students to broaden their
understanding of Events Management within the third sector whilst also having the
opportunity to work alongside industry professionals.
Whilst attending the Gathering HNC Photography students are
able to apply their learning by capturing social and corporate images of the
visitors, exhibitors and seminars. These images align to the course content and
can be used for assessment submissions. Furthermore, images taken by the
photography students are used by SCVO for marketing future events and posted on
the company website.
